A letter has been sent claiming to be from 'Alex Tam' of 'Alex Nim-Anong Associates of Bangkok'.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that a letter has been sent to a member of the public claiming to be from a British solicitor called 'Alex Tam'.

The letter states that 'Alex Tam' is instructed by 'the Law Office of Alex Nim-Anong Associates of Bangkok' and asks the member of the public to transfer funds in relation to a property transaction.

The letter provides an address for 'Alex Tam' in Bristol, BS8. It also provides the email addresses 'nimanong.solicitors@gmail.com' and 'alexbritishsolicitor@gmail.com', and the telephone number '0776 0111 861'.

Any business of transaction through the email addresses or telephone number mentioned above is not undertaken by a firm or a solicitor authorised by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor who uses the name Alex Tam who has confirmed he is not connected with the letter or contact details mentioned in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
